Art Files: Heather den Uijl
Heather den Uijl is a painter based in Houston, TX. Den Uijl’s work consists of large- and small-scale abstract paintings that utilize hyper-saturated colors, interwoven layers, and abstracted, geometrical forms that slip, slide, float, and wobble past each other. The paintings are immersive experiences that function as independent, hybrid environments in which distillation, flattening, and fragmentation resist a sense of closure. Within each painting, expectations about how shapes, forms, and spaces interact with one another are challenged or subverted. Shadow does not always adhere to the form it describes, light sources are not always consistent, objects can appear both in front of and behind spaces, and forms both float and attach themselves to an established ground. Through rupturing predetermined logic, the seemingly wrong or amiss become an accepted outcome. Currently, her solo show Off Kilter is on view until October 2023 at the North Gallery in Houston, TX. Her work has been featured in various spaces across Texas, including the Visual Arts Center, the Lawndale Art Center, and BOX 13 ArtSpace. Den Uijl holds an MFA from the University of Texas at Austin and a BFA in Painting with a Minor in Art History from University of Houston.
