Charlie Visconage is a self-taught artist living and working in Washington, DC. Visconage started painting in 2013 at the advice of a friend and hasn't put the brush down since. His work is continually changing. After many years of creating art, he traveled to his first international residency program in 2018—one aimed specifically for self-taught artists in Trebnje, Slovenia. Since then, he strives to create art outside of the US every few years. Visconage traveled to Japan for a residency in early 2020 and most recently to Portugal in March of 2022. The works shared in this issue are some of his favorite landscape paintings that he made after a friend advised him to paint what he didn't think he could paint. Charlie’s work focuses on capturing the darkly comedic moments of our time, finding joy in spite of the slow death of capitalism and the end of the American empire. When not painting, he rides to work on his classic motorcycle, travels with his wife, and plays with his rescue dog.
