Art Files: Anna Teiche

Sinking, Oil on canvas, 68 x 76 in, 2021.

Working in oil painting, gouache, and drawing, Anna Teiche uses colors and compositions combined with layers of thick and thin paint to create bodily landscapes. Teiche’s work hovers between abstraction, figuration, and identifiable horizon lines. Her paintings form from collections of photographs, often collaged together and built up through drawing. Teiche draws influence from her upbringing in the Pacific Northwest watching forest fires transform the environment in cycles of death and regrowth, and her recent experience care-taking for a loved one undergoing cancer treatments. Her work emerges from observations of ecosystems, illness, and grief. In 2021, her work was included in New American Paintings no. 151, curated by Anna Katz of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Teiche has participated in various group and solo shows across the country, including the Visual Arts Center in Texas and the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art in Washington. She completed artist residencies internationally in Hungary, Lithuania, and Iceland. Teiche holds a BFA in Art and Design from California Polytechnic State University and an MFA from University of Texas at Austin.
